The Western State College Mountain Rescue Team strives to provide exemplary mountain rescue services, including but not limited to, large-scale wilderness search, high angle rope rescue, low angle rope rescue, avalanche rescue, winter rescue, and mountain safety education. These services are offered to the county of Gunnison, the state of Colorado, and anywhere mountain rescue services may be needed. The Western State College Mountain Rescue team was founded in 1973 by the men and women of Western State College. In 1987, the team became the first collegiate-based mountain rescue team certified by the Mountain Rescue Association. WSCMRT is a FEMA type I mountain rescue team and member of the Colorado Search and Rescue Board. Ninety percent of the members are students at WSC, the rest are members of the Gunnison community. The thousands of volunteer hours the team provides result in a high quality and much needed service which is provided without cost to the victim, victim’s family, or to the taxpayer, and is usually accomplished without fanfare or public recognition. Efforts are put forth by the members of the WSCMRT to maintain a "fully qualified and rescue ready MRA team."

New Team Blog!
